Gynecological Surgeries

Many women undergo gynecological surgery for different reasons. They are unsure whether they need the procedure and what type of procedure. Dr. Jeffrey R. Some of Our Gynecological Surgeries Include:

• Dilation & Curettage: This procedure is famously known as D&C. In this surgery, the mouth of your uterus or the cervix is dilated and the contents of the uterus are gently scraped and sent to pathology for diagnosis. Dr. Yessenow notes that this is generally done when a woman suffers from fibroids or frequent heavy or irregular periods.
• Pelvic Laparoscopy: This is done to examine the pelvic organs. In this procedure a small tube is inserted into your abdomen under light general anesthesia. Dr. Yessenow, who has performed thousands of laparoscopies, usually performs this procedure to detect cysts, endometriosis, adhesions in pelvis, infections like pelvic inflammatory disease, torsion of ovary, scar tissue, uterine fibroids or other gastro intestinal or urological diseases.
• Cryosurgery: This is done when a Pap smear test results are positive. Dr. Yessenow explains that this procedure is also used to remove genital warts, cervical dysplasia and vaginal and vulvar lesions.
• Hysterectomy: This is a procedure that involves removal of a woman’s uterus. Dr. Yessenow performs this surgery when fibroids and endometriosis are not treatable with medication, when a woman suffers from chronic pelvic pain, cancer of uterus, cervix or ovaries, prolapsed uterus or when there is persistent irregular vaginal bleeding. There are different ways to perform hysterectomies. Dr. Yessenow is an expert on the vaginal approach, abdominal approach, and the laparoscopic approach. He performed the first laparoscopic hysterectomy in Northwest Indiana.
• Oophorectomy: In this type of surgery, either one or both the ovaries are removed due to a tumor or cyst growth in one or both ovaries.
